Crystal dragons are a type of gem dragon. They are easily identifiable by their large dorsal frill and stunted (yet fully functional) wings. Perhaps the friendliest of the gem dragons, they are intensely curious about the world. They prefer to make their lairs on mountaintops or other places with wide open spaces and unrestricted access to the air, especially for stargazing. Though physically weaker than most other dragons, they can defend themselves by exhaling a blast of razor-sharp shards of radiant energy to simultaneously cut, burn, and blind their foes.

Their choice of lairs frequently brings them into conflict with white dragons. They have also developed a notable enmity towards giants, who quickly discovered that crystal dragons are easier to enslave than their stronger cousins.
