Penator was a large island in far eastern Syra. It has no centralized government, with its few small towns operating largely independently.

History

Hundreds of years ago, a small group of chromatic dragons settled on the island, declaring all the people who lived there to be their property. When the people protested, the dragons devastated large swathes of land, killing many of the inhabitants and cowing the rest. The dragons were ultimately slain, but the island never truly recovered. Though the elves used their magic to accelerate the regrowth of the forest, a vast band of dead land known as the Ashen Plain runs across the island, where little grows beyond a few spots of hardy scrub brush. Though the southern half of the island is active enough to sustain its small population, there are few other valuable natural resources.

Though there are two small ports where trade is conducted with the mainland, Penator is otherwise largely isolated. Few people who were not born there have cause to travel to Penator, and the more adventurous of its citizens rarely stay for long.

Population

Penator's population is made up mostly of humans, with halflings and dwarves making up the next largest groups. There are also several wild elf villages in Brindenwood, though they rarely leave the forest.
