Sapphire dragons are a type of gem dragon. With their dark scales and long, curved horns, they are frequently mistaken for black dragons. Unlike their chromatic cousins, sapphire dragons lair almost exclusively in underground caverns. Incredibly antisocial and fiercely territorial, smaller creatures would do well to simply avoid them altogether. This suits sapphire dragons just fine, and they have a tendency to leave the severed heads of evil races such as drow, duergar, and illithids outside their lairs as a warning. Those who fail to heed the warning frequently find themselves on the receiving end of a concussive exhalation that warps the minds of those caught in it, filling their thoughts with their darkest fears.
