Desatysso was a human wizard who spent much of his life researching Acererak, eventually piecing together a nearly complete history of the lich. At the end of his studies, he found a message from Acererak: that the one who could discover the path to his Fortress of Conclusion would be greatly rewarded for their skill. Believing he knew how this could be accomplished, in 2940 he hired Falon T'selvin and the Band of the Hand to escort him to and through the Tomb of Horrors. The expedition ended with most of the Band killed; only Grunther and Sather survived, physically and mentally scarred by the ordeal.

Destaysso, however, had acquired what he needed and used a pinch of bone dust from Acererak's demilich construct to pass into the city of Moil. From there, he navigated through all of Acererak's traps and trials and finally reached the Fortress of Conclusion, where he met with Acererak. Unfortunately, Acererak was not as impressed with Desatysso as the wizard's research had led him to believe. Rather than killing him, however, Acererak used an enchanted thread to sew his legs together, his arms to his sides, and his mouth and eyes closed. Acererak then left him dangling from the ceiling, the thread's magic keeping him alive but in constant pain.

In 2970, the Sutler Expedition acquired Desatysso's journal from Sather and used it to reach the Fortress of Conclusion themselves. There they found Desatysso and Tony Child, aghast at Acererak's cruelty, killed him to put him out of his misery. Unfortunately, this triggered the other part of the thread's enchantment, as it ripped free of Desatysso's body and threaded itself through Tony in the same fashion. Only by carefully removing the stitches from Tony without killing him as well were his companions able to break its magic.

Leardon Sunflare subsequently raised Desatysso as a ghoul, though he was disappointed that the wizard's soul did not occupy his undead body, having instead been drawn into Acererak's phylactery at the heart of the fortress. The ghoul Desatysso served Leardon as they made their way through the Fortress, usually testing potential traps. Eventually it was grabbed by one of Acererak's demons and hurled through a magical portal to the Fortress's entryway, where another of Acererak's curses trapped it within the hellish mural adorning the walls.
