Grunther was a strong but dim fighter who wielded a magical battleaxe named "Elsie."

In 2940, Grunther and others were hired by the wizard Desatysso to explore the Tomb of Horrors. Their expedition ended in disaster; most of their companions were killed, and Grunther lost his left hand. Upon returning to Silverstone Grunther made a living as hiring himself out for local jobs. Most of his time was spent visiting either the grave of their leader, Falon T'selvin, or the home of his one surviving companion, Sather.

Thirty years later, he was approached by the Sutler Expedition who were searching for Desatysso and through him information about the Tomb of Horrors' master, Acererak. Grunther accompanied them into Palmheart and to the Black Academy, where they learned of a hidden portal within the Tomb of Horrors. Upon arriving there they were joined by Leardon Sunflare, who also sought Acererak for his own reasons. The portal led them to the city of Moil, a series of towers within the Shadowfell extending upwards from a seemingly bottomless void of negative energy. During their exploration, Leardon regenerated Grunther's lost hand.

While exploring one such tower, Grunther was paralyzed by the venom of an animated ice snake guarding a narrow tunnel downwards. When a fireball's detonation caused the ceiling to cave in, the group hurried into the tunnel, sending Grunther's paralyzed form through with them. Unfortunately, being paralyzed meant that Grunther had no way to stop himself as they slid down; when the tunnel emerged onto a narrow ledge Grunther slid off and vanished into the darkness below. Ru Bae Ya confirmed that nothing could survive in such high concentrations of negative energy.
